International Trade Visit
Stephen Armistead, Managing Director of Trade Copiers has returned from a two-week-long 20,000-mile international trade mission to the United Arab Emirates and Southeast Asia.
On the heels of winning several large contracts to collect and process used photocopiers from companies across the UK, the Penrith based company looked to fertile international markets to further expand its export operation.
Stephen commented: “The visit has been immensely positive with new customers brought on board and existing customers agreeing to increase the number of machines they buy which of course is fantastic. However, stepping off the plane back in freezing cold England when just a few hours ago it was 40 degrees is always a shock to the system!”
Trade Copiers Interviewed for Award
While the MD is travelling around the Middle East and Malaysia on a business trip the voice and face of the company falls to Stephen Brownsteele, Digital Marketing Manager who was interviewed and filmed for the upcoming In-Cumbria Business Awards.
He said “I'm just hoping that they will be able salvage some cogent and coherent sentences from the rambling white noise I was producing.”
Trade Copiers walked away with the Best Exporter Award last year and are hoping to repeat the win.
Awards Judging Process
We've just said goodbye to the lovely Maria Whitehead MBE of The Hawkshead Relish Company who has been interviewing us as part of our In-Cumbria Business Award - Best Exporter submission. Fingers crossed we can repeat last years win!
Stephen Brownsteele, Marketing Manager said “Maria came to interview us last year when we were in the process of the building work so she has been able to see real and physical improvements which should bode well for the final decision on who has won Best Exporter.”
Held at Halston Hotel, in Carlisle on Thursday November 15 to celebrate the best in Cumbria business, his years' host will be one of the most popular radio presenters in the UK, Jeremy Vine.
Shortlisted for In-Cumbria Award
The office is buzzing as the news circulates that we’ve been shortlisted for the In-cumbria Business Awards in the Best Exporter Category.
Stephen Brownsteele, Marketing Manager said “We face some tough competition this year in the form of Oxley Group who run a large and very tight export operation but I know how good we are here so I’m looking forward to the November awards.”
The Best Exporter award is aimed at companies which have developed new markets outside the United Kingdom and can demonstrate significant export sales in relation to the size of the company, success in accessing markets outside the United Kingdom and trade growth through exports and the ability to sustain that growth.
July has seen the export department send off six 40FT containers in one week easily smashing through the magic 1000 machines exported to global markets in a 5 day period.
Export Manager Ashley McCall said “Breaking the 1000 machines exported in a week barrier has been something my team and I have had our sights on for a long time now and I can tell you that it is no mean feat! It feels great though and it’s a testament to the recent investment in the loading area and warehouse that’s allowed this achievement.”
Trade Copiers run a thriving export business for used copiers and have over 3000 machines in stock. We have exported tens of thousands of used photocopiers, printers and multifunction devices throughout the world to places such as China, UAE, Pakistan, Botswana and Egypt.
New Machine Testing Area Inaugurated
Data security is, as ever, a hot topic and Trade Copiers has long offered HDD wiping to all our customers. With GDPR, ePrivacy and a slew of data breaches in the news recently our customers are increasingly sensitive to the security of information stored on copiers HDDs. To ensure our clients confidentiality we have invested in three data erasure systems allowing us to offer various options. We use a Logicube Omniclone 10Xi, a Logicube ZX-Tower System and a Blancco e800 to securely erase HDDs. These systems can be configured to wipe all data on HDD’s to recognised standards including the US DoD 5220.22-M standard and the UK National Cyber Security Centre HMG Infosec Standard No: 5.
Overseeing all machine processing operations is Dik Stoddart, he said: “With the new dedicated testing and data wiping bays set up we can processes many more machines a day and give our customers a complete and trackable audit trail for each HDD giving them the confidence to continue to use Trade Copiers.”
Phase One of Expansion Completed
Phase one of the £500k expansion project is complete! After months of digging, brick laying, concrete pouring, steel work, cabling and painting we have our brand new dedicated container loading area.
The new area allows a container load of copiers to be stored separately ready for loading instead of having to collect each one from the main warehouse when a lorry arrives which dramatically speeds up the loading process and allows us to increase container turnover.
Stephen Brownsteele, Marketing Manager said: "These improvements mean we can continue to win contracts by offering the highest level of service backed up by a robust and reliable infrastructure that our customers demand."
The final phases of the expansion will be complete in June which will see the new state-of-the-art testing workshop become operational along with additional mezzanine machine storage capacity.
Miss Cumbria Charity Auction
Lucy Salter's journy to becoming Miss Cumbria 2018 continues and to help raise money, Stephen Armistead, the founder and director of Trade Copiers has kindly donated a signed photo of boxer Ricky Hatton and a glove worn by Lennox Lewis to be auctioned off at the Shepherds Inn Carlisle. With a fair wind the pair should fetch in the region of £100 - £300 which will be donated to Variety Children’s Charity who provide practical and tangible help to children and their families throughout the UK.
Lucy’s other fundraising and volunteering activities include walking 26 miles around the beautiful Talkin Tarn, litter picking at Irthington, marshalling the Carlisle park run, bag packing at Sainsbury’s, collecting money at M&S and a superhero fancy dress race at the Carlisle Racecourse in aid of Eden Valley Hospice. Lucy has yet to decide which superhero she will be dressed as with the Incredible Hulk being a popular choice in the office.
Miss Cumbria In The Making
You may think it only happens in movies but the dream of being scouted while walking through town happened for Lucy Salter, Assistant Consumables Purchaser at Trade Copiers. Spotted by a recruiter for Miss Cumbria 2018 while shopping, Lucy has agreed to take part in the annual competition.
Happily the contest has moved on significantly from its roots in the 1920’s. Long gone are the days of the swim suit round and contestants saying they want World Peace and an end to poverty. The competitors in Miss Cumbria 2018 will be judged on their actions covering various forms of charity work, fund raising and volunteering.
Lucy said "I'm honestly shocked at being chosen to compete, I was just doing some shopping in Carlisle when I was approached and thought it was a joke at first.
Although originally from Northamptonshire, Lucy, who now lives in Dalston has already made it through the first round of Miss Cumbria with her charitable and fundraising work seeing her comfortably through to the finals.
Trade Copiers Attains ISO27001
In addition to our ISO14001 Environmental Management certificate we are now ISO27001 accredited. The ISO27001 Information Security Management System is a framework of policies and procedures that includes all legal, physical and technical controls involved in an organisation's information risk management processes.
This certificate shows that Trade Copiers has robust data security procedures in place and assures our existing and future customers that we are a reputable and responsible company to work with.
The project was spearheaded by Dik Stoddart, Operations Manager, Dik said “The policies and procedures that were put in place to obtain this accreditation touched upon every part of the business from Marketing to HR, through to Finance and of course there was a major focus on how we destroy all sensitive data on the 1000’s of used copier hard drives that we process every month."
Extension Work Nearing Completion
It was only two months ago that the first hole was dug and now we have an almost finished extension with just roller doors and a few internal finishes to be added. The expanded loading bay will allow us to store several shipments away from the main warehouse making loading and unloading much easier and quicker.
The warehouse itself has also seen a huge increase in floor space meaning that we can store more copiers and give our customers better deals.
Dik Stoddart, Operations Manager said “It may seem like a lot of work just to increase floor space but what the extensions now enable us to do is process and test machines much faster, load containers from a dedicated area which is vastly more efficient and of course store more machines. The upshot of all these improvements is that more containers full of copiers are able go out every week.”
Chloe Dent Nominated for Employee of the Year!
Our very own Chloe Dent has been nominated for the Cumbria Family Business Awards - Employee of the Year! A public vote opens shortly to choose the winner so get ready to stand in Chloe's corner!
Although afflicted with a crippling fear of butterflies and a sever intolerance to berries in any form, Chloe brings an abundance of energy into the office every day. Consistently at the top of the sales board, Chloe's easy going manner means she fosters close relationships with all of her customers and is often still talking on the phone long after they have placed an order.
Chloe said “It's still sinking in really, I just come to work every day and do what I do. I think a lot of people here should have been nominated over me but I'm delighted nonetheless and I want everyone to vote for me.”
We're back from Paperworld
Ashley, Mark, Adam and MD Stephen have returned from a week in Frankfurt, Germany at our inaugural Paperworld exhibition.
By sheer coincidence the team landed a day early and were able to take in a football match before getting down to business at the exhibition and meeting hundreds of new business contacts.
Stephen Armistead, Managing Director, said “Paperworld is the largest meeting place for the printer consumables industry and our business has grown to a level where we really needed to have a presence at the 2018 exhibition and I’m very happy to say it's been a huge success and we will definitely be back next year bigger and better.”
Work continues apace on expansion!
The expansion work is coming on apace on the £500k expansions. The steels are up for the new state-of-the-art testing and refurbishing area.
We've also broken ground on the upgraded loading bay area which will dramatically increase the number of containers we can ship each week.
Stephen Brownsteele, Marketing Manager, said “The lads on site have been great, working through all the terrible Cumbrian weather we've had recently but we're keeping them fuelled with tea and bacon sandwiches and are on track for our completion date.”
Breaking Ground on £500,000 Expansion
We have broken ground on two new expansion projects here at the Penrith depot. The £500,000 investment will see new space created to house a state of the art testing and refurbishing area.
The other part of the expansion will dramatically increase the copier storage area and includes an upgrade to the loading dock allowing us to ship 30% more containers.
Stephen Brownsteele, Marketing Manager, said “Following on from winning the In-Cumbria Best Exporter 2017 award, we are delighted to see this level of investment. Breaking ground on the £500,000 expansion is a real declaration of our confidence in the continued growth of the business.”
Happy New Year!
We would like to thank all of our customers, friends and business partners in helping make 2017 one of the best yet! Awarded the Best Exporter accolade from In-Cumbria Business Awards, Trade Copiers has enjoyed another year of growth seeing new additions to the team, large investment in the fleet and the acquisition of a nearby premises to be converted into more office space.
We have robust plans in place to continue this level of growth throughout 2018 and beyond, we will achieve the information security management standard ISO 27001 and we are exhibiting at the messe Frankfurt Paperworld event. We look forward to a prosperous and exciting year.

After a hectic 2016 which saw the company expand even further we would like to wish all of our customers our very best wishes for 2017 and say thank you for making 2016 yet another successful year for Trade Copiers. We aim to continue to improve even more on our service this coming year and we look forward to another year of working together with you.

Welcome to the team Josh!
Having upgraded our ISO14001 accreditation to the newly released 2015 version earlier this year, October saw us undergoing our first external audit to the stricter 2015 version. We are extremely proud to announce that we passed with flying colours! Our Environmental Management System was highly praised by the auditor from QMS International and we received no observations or non-conformances. This is mainly due to the fact that we at Trade Copiers take our environmental obligations so seriously that we employ a full time Environmental Manager as well as having staff who are passionate about the environment and have bought into the companies policy of minimising our effect on the environment.
To help us manage our photocopier collections and deliveries more efficiently we have purchased a brand new addition to our fleet of vehicles this month. This is a brand new DAF XF 510 unit and we have taken on John Davidson, as a new member of staff to drive the new unit. John has many years experience in Class 1 driving and will be a welcome addition to our team here at Trade Copiers.
A large part of the reasoning behind the purchasing of this particular truck was its Euro 6 certified performance which goes hand in hand with our ISO14001:2015 certification helping deliver environmental benefits so not only can we manage more collections & deliveries we can do it in a more environmentally friendly manner. As yet the truck and trailer are not wrapped with our corporate logo but the truck is booked in already and once we receive our custom built trailer that will be booked into AST Signs for wrapping also.
This month saw three new additions to our team here at Trade Copiers.
Kirsty McMullen has joined us as Business Development Manager. Kirsty's main role will be out and about on the road visiting existing and potential customers.
Steve Lewis and Brandon Murdoch join our busy team in the warehouse. Their main roles will be loading containers with our export machines as well as helping with the unloading of deliveries of used copiers and general stock duties at our Penrith depot. Overt time the guys will be given training to enable them both to help our team of technicians in testing the used copiers which come into the warehouse.
Due to continued growth Trade Copiers Ltd are seeking to fill the following positions:
HGV CLASS 1 DRIVER
This is a
full time position working out of our busy Penrith Headquarters delivering and collecting photocopiers throughout the UK. The successful applicant will be driving our modern fleet of vehicles including Class 1, Class 2 and a 7 ton van.
No experience of photocopiers is required as full training will be given although there will be an element of heavy lifting so applicants should be fit and active. A Class 1 license and a current CPC card are required and applicants should be 25 years or over to comply with our insurance.
The position is Monday to Friday with no weekend working and will entail nights away through the week as required. There will be occasional work in our warehouse if there are no driving duties.
This is a full time position with 25 days paid leave plus bank holidays. The salary is negotiable and a uniform is provided.
Working out of our busy warehouse at our Penrith Headquarters this job will involve processing and testing of photocopiers into the warehouse, helping our team load and unload deliveries and collections as well as keeping the warehouse neat and tidy. No experience of photocopiers is required as full training will be given although there will be an element of heavy lifting so applicants should be fit and active.
This is a full time position of 37.5 hours per week with 25 days paid leave plus bank holidays. The salary is negotiable and a full uniform will be provided. This position would ideally suit an enthusiastic young person looking to progress in a forward thinking company.
To apply for either of the positions email email@example.com with a covering note and your CV.
Phase One of our the office re-build is now complete with all of the Sales Team sharing one large office instead of being spread about in separate offices. Phase Two of the upstairs refurbishment has now started with work progressing on a new conference room, and new offices for our Accounts Dept as well as for our Managing Director. Once these are completed we will get some photographs taken and upload them to this page.
As well as the office restructure we have spent some time looking at the way our team is organised. Because of our continued expansion and the fact we are now purchasing and selling more and more equipment and consumables, we found it necessary to create dedicated departments for our sales and purchasing teams. We believe that this reorganisation will streamline the way we do business and make it easier for our customers to get in touch with the right people first time.
Our new sales office is undergoing final finishing touches and once these are completed the sales team will be taking up occupancy - photos to follow.
Two new faces joined the ever expanding team at Trade Copiers in April. Simon Kean has joined the Export Department as Export Co-ordinator and Matthew Little has joined the Toner Department as Consumables Purchaser. A big welcome to both from all of the team here.
Our new Sales Office is rapidly taking shape and hopefully should be finished and occupied by early May.
Early March saw the start of our new project to 'wrap' all of our transport fleet with our corporate logo. The first vehicle to be wrapped was one of our lorries which prior to the wrap being completed was just a very boring white paint finish!
The wrapping was done locally by AST Signs and even if we say so ourselves the new design is looking extremely good. So, if your driving along and see one of vehicles please feel free to give it a hoot and a wave.
March has also seen the start of work on our brand new Sales Office at our Penrith HQ. The existing offices are being demolished and brand new offices are being built. This will give us a large, open plan Sales Office to hold 12 sales staff as well as a meeting room and new offices for other departments such as accounts. We have been assured these are going to super plush so watch this space!
We would like to wish one of our drivers, Simon, the best of luck as he embarks on his new career working in the gas industry. Simon leaves us with our very best wishes for the future. Jim Chisholm has joined us to replace Simon and a big welcome to Jim from all of the team here at Trade Copiers.
February also saw Stephen Armistead, Director, and Ashley McCall, Export Manager, take a business trip visiting customers in Dubai, Hong Kong and China.
We would like to wish all of our customers our very best wishes for 2016 and say thank you for making 2015 such a successful year for Trade Copiers. We aim to continue to improve even more on our service this coming year and we look forward to another year of working together with you.
January saw another addition to our expanding team here at Trade Copiers. We are very pleased to welcome Sarah Cokell to our Penrith Sales Office. Sarah has joined us as a Consumables Account Manager
and she will be working very closely with the existing team in the toners and consumables department. The next time you need toner or consumables, give us a bell and why not ask for Sarah and say hello?
Also in January we underwent an upgrade from our ISO14001:2014 certification to the updated, more stringent version of the environmental standard which came out late in 2015. We are one of the first companies in our sector to achieve this upgraded standard - ISO14001:2015 - and are very proud of not only holding the standard but leading the way when it comes to our environmental credentials.

Simon Daynes has also joined us this month, primarily to bolster our team of existing drivers who are constantly on the road delivering and collecting copiers all over the UK. Simon will also help out in the warehouse when not on the road. A big welcome to Chris and Simon from all of us at the Trade Copiers team.
